WHAT ARE
LAB GROWN
DIAMONDS?

Lab grown diamonds are grown in controlled laboratory environments that replicate the conditions under which diamonds naturally develop. Just like natural diamonds, they are made of carbon and are chemically and optically indistinguishable.
We now offer lab grown diamonds for our VOW by Ring Concierge collection. To ensure you make the best decision when determining which diamond is right for you, we've outlined everything you know about lab grown diamonds below.

VALUE

Natural diamonds have hundreds of years of pricing history as well as a finite supply, making them rarer and better able to hold value over time. Since there is a continuous supply of lab growns, there is less certainty regarding their long-term value. The infinite supply of lab grown diamonds makes them less expensive than natural diamonds so it is important to note that the pricing for lab grown diamonds is less stable, ultimately resulting in less certainty of their long-term value. If you’re ever thinking about trading in your ring or trading up in the future, we advise going with a mined diamond. If you don’t think that’s something that you want to do and you just want the biggest diamond possible for your budget, a lab grown diamond can be a great option.

THE 4 CS

Just like with natural diamonds, the larger the carat weight, the rarer the lab grown diamond becomes. Lab grown diamonds are graded for color and clarity in the same way natural diamonds are. All modern shapes are readily available. Unfortunately, lab grown diamonds are not available in antique cuts like Old Euros and Old Mines.

CERTIFICATION

We only work with certified lab grown diamonds. Since to the naked eye, lab-grown diamonds cannot be distinguished from natural diamonds, all lab growns are laser inscribed with "LG" and an identification number.

FAQs

What are lab grown diamonds? Are they actual diamonds?

Yes, lab grown diamonds have the exact same chemical makeup as natural diamonds. They are both made of carbon and are optically indistinguishable to the naked eye. The key difference between lab grown diamonds versus natural diamonds is the way they are created. Lab grown diamonds are grown in controlled laboratory environments that replicate what occurs naturally deep in the earth, allowing for them to display the same chemical and optical properties as natural diamonds.

If they are identical to the naked eye, can a jeweler still tell the difference?

Yes, there are ways for jewelry professionals to distinguish lab grown diamonds from natural diamonds, but only through tests using specialized equipment. From the consumer standpoint, the certification has to state that it's lab grown (we only work with certified lab grown diamonds), and the diamond itself is laser inscribed with "LG.”

If I choose a lab grown diamond as my center stone, will all diamonds in the setting be lab grown as well?

Yes, if you selected a lab grown diamond center stone during your design process, the accent diamonds on your diamond will also be lab grown. Specifics for each side stone setting will be detailed on the product page.

Are lab grown diamonds the same as moissanite?

No. Moissanite has a totally different chemical makeup than diamonds; they are made of silicon carbides, making them synthetic diamond simulants. Moissanite stones are white and are fairly hard in composition, so they are a common choice for those looking for diamond alternatives given their affordable pricing. However, moissanites just don’t sparkle the same as diamonds, and the visual difference between them is detectable and apparent to the naked eye when compared side-by-side.

Are there environmentally-friendly benefits of one versus the other?

Most lab-growing processes leave a carbon footprint, so if this is super important to you, we can find lab grown diamonds made through a process that leaves zero carbon footprint, but the options will be very limited. This is partially why we love working with antique diamonds — it's essentially a luxe way of recycling.

Why are lab grown diamonds priced differently than natural diamonds?

Due to how lab grown diamonds are produced, there is a continuous supply and less certainty regarding their long-term value. Pricing for natural diamonds is driven by their unique characteristics and rarity. Natural diamonds have hundreds of years of pricing history as well as a finite supply, making them rarer and better able to hold value over time.

Are lab grown diamonds certified?

Yes, the lab grown diamonds Ring Concierge offers are certified by either GIA or IGI. Lab grown diamonds are graded for color and clarity in the same way natural diamonds are so certification will accompany any engagement ring purchase.

Can you insure a lab grown diamond engagement ring?

Yes, engagement rings using lab grown diamonds can be insured.

Are lab grown diamonds flawless?

Just like natural diamonds, lab grown diamonds will have variations in their clarity, color, and cut.

Do lab grown diamonds get cloudy?

No, lab grown diamonds retain their sparkle the same way that natural diamonds do.

Do you offer lab grown diamonds for all fine jewelry or just bridal?
